Sea Horses

This week we are diving back into the shallow waters of the ocean! We are learning all about sea horses. We have so far discovered sea horses are very interesting animals....they definitely have some unique things about them.
Here is just a tid bit of what we are have learned today:

  1. The dad sea horse actually carries all the eggs! There can be hundreds of eggs at ONE TIME!!!
  2. Each morning the sea horses dance first thing.
  3. The mom sea horse still makes the eggs but she passes them on to daddy!
  4. Once the babies are born, the mom and dad both leave the animals to survive on their own!
  5. Sea horses can camouflage themselves in the water!

These are a few of the things we have learned. Now it is your turn!
  1.  What part of the ocean do they actually lay their eggs?
  2. What are the enemies of the sea horse?
  3. What types of food do sea horses eat?
  4. Do sea horses migrate? Or do they live in one spot forever?
  5. Why in the world are sea horses so small?

  1. I think it's great that you are learning about seahorses...they are one of my favorite animals! Landon & I got to see some real seahorses in the ocean on a couple of different trips to Florida. We found them while snorkeling in a shallow, weedy area. I wanted to take them home with me, but they really need to stay in the ocean to keep them healthy. If we take too many out of the ocean, there won't be any left for us to enjoy! As an eye doctor, I also think it's cool that seahorses have such excellent vision...they can see forwards & backwards at the same time since they have eyes on the sides of their heads! I wish we could see like that! And I also think it's neat how they use their snouts like little vacuums to suck up their food. Sea horses are very interesting! I have some pictures to show you that I will email to Ms. Race! Lori Canfield (Landon's mom)

  2. We are so excited to see your pictures! Can't wait until Monday!

Here is a question...we learned earlier this year that sea turtles have a hard time getting from the egg on the beach to the ocean. It is a huge survival task for them being such a small size. Well, we have also learned this week that sea horses have a hard time also! We discovered number one they are TINY!!! Number two, only about 2-3 sea horses per family survive to live the whole 5 years of expectancy. So....which one do you think has the hardest survival in life?
